I met Marna Michele at the Abilities Expo in Los Angeles 2019 when scouting for talent. I suggested that she apply for the Anton Yelchin Foundation Artist Grant in Music. We are so happy that she applied and that she is a winner for this year’s 2020 Artist Grant in Music.
When did you first find an interest in music?
I started playing music when I was in the 6thgrade. I have always had music in my family and was raised around it and done little things, but in 6thgrade I decided that music would be my career choice and I began singing. So, I entered into the school talent show and won! I sang “When”, by Shania Twain. I was also in choir through every year of school. When I entered Junior High, I became president of the choir, and I continued to be President through every grade until Senior year. I always tried to get a band together, but it never seemed to be the right fit… they never stuck around.
Is your family supportive of your musical aspirations?
My mom is my biggest supporter. She is a vocalist, she did a lot of singing and soloing and even has a record. My whole family is made up of musicians with musical backgrounds. They are very supportive. My uncles have a band and perform in Las Vegas, and my aunt was a show girl in Vegas with her own show. She performed with Engelbert Humperdinck! That was a cool thing back in the day!
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on my next 5 song EP. I just came back from the studio where we started writing songs. On my first album, “Hold On”, I had songs already written and ready to go. But this time, I’m trying to get my creative juices flowing by spending a lot of time in the studio and writing with my two producers.
I’m also on American Idol! My audition will air March 8th and you should tune in to see if she makes it to Hollywood!
Who has inspired you?
I have so many artists that inspire me. One of my favorites from the newer generation would be Kelly Clarkson because she hasn’t changed who she is and she’s always released music that she has truly loved. And when she didn’t love the music she was making, she wasn’t afraid to be vocal about it. She always admitted if something wasn’t her favorite, but she’s always improved herself and I really like that. Music is a really hard industry to enter, it’s definitely my passion, I just hope that I keep going and never give up.
Honestly, this grant has INSPIRED me to keep going. The fact that I was found by the Anton Yelchin Foundation and the fact that they actually believed in me enough to give me the grant, it pushed me forward. I was really getting jaded, and wondering if I should keep going. This just reassured me that I should keep going.
How are you planning to using the grant money?
I’m going to put the money towards my album. Honestly, it takes a lot of weight off my back because I am paying for all of this by myself and it’s hard. It’s really hard to financially support myself and then also pay for groceries and rent and then also keep my passion going. It’s going toward the album for sure! I’m so thankful for this grant.
We are so happy to make a positive impact in your life and your art! Keep going Marna!
